Department of Planning, Industry and Environment Submission

Development consent is sought for a waste management facility, including resource recovery and waste transfer facility handling up to 250,000 tonnes per annum of waste for separating and sorting, processing or treating, temporary storage, or transfer or sale of recovered resources.

We are listening to the community…

We have heard the feedback and concerns in response to the submission.

We have made some changes and additions in response to concerns raised by the community, in reference to the yet to be approved secondary Industrial Precinct Facility location.

These concerns do not apply to the currently operating Mary’s Mount location.

Primarily: Noise, dust, toxic waste (asbestos and lithium batteries).

See below for further info.

NOISE

We are going to substitute diesel powered separating plant (called a trommel) with an electric powered plant and any crushing of brick, rubble, concrete  & tiles will now be undertaken at the quarry using our existing crushing plant.

These two changes will give a significant change to noise emanating from the site.

In addition to that, we are investigating using more sound mitigating insulation within the main processing shed and have the south facing roller doors on the processing shed closed during operations. We have also streamlined the machines that will be used at the facility and have eliminated several that weren’t really required further reducing noise impacts.

The above actions will also have an additional benefit of less diesel fumes from the site.

DUST

All trafficable surfaces will be either bitumen sealed or asphalt sealed so there is minimal chance of any wheel generated dust.

All unloading will occur in the processing shed and with most doors closed thus minimising any dust being emitted while unloading. There will also be an extensive water misting system within the shed that will be movement sensitive and will be the main mechanism of dust control during any processing.

The office and workshop site already have a sprinkler system in place for dust suppression and this will be replicated across the whole resource recovery site.

TOXIC WASTE

There will be no restricted, contaminated or toxic waste processed or accepted at the facility. This includes asbestos and lithium batteries. Any loads detected with any of the above will not be permitted to enter the facility and will be sent back to where they have come from.

All loads that come to site have to have paperwork with them that states what they are carrying and this will be verified via a three step checking process; a visual check from above the load at the weighbridge, a scan of the load that can identify if there is any asbestos material in the load and a visual check as the truck is unloading in the processing shed.

All material coming onto site, and going off site, has to be accounted for and this will be done using two separate weight bridges.
